Hi-Desert Star
July 15, 2009
Don't get
too excited about this article folks! This article is VERY
misleading!
Chad Mayes is up
for re-election in 2010.
Chad Mayes
reportedly had lunch with Jim Sammons, who is no longer an elected YMIA
Board of Directors Member or in a leadership role with the Stop Yucca Mesa
Annexation Coalition. Mayes never contacted this Coalition,
which is the only organization in the Yucca Mesa Community actively fighting the Sphere of Influence
full time with
2400 petition signatures backing it. The Homestead Valley
Community Council has also joined our efforts and is providing
support.
Mayes says he is
"willing to request that the Council revisit the LAFCO
application as a future agenda item at the August 4 Council
meeting." The Town of Yucca Valley Ordinance No.
148, 2.05.180, Council Agenda, states: "The
Town Clerk or his/her designee shall prepare an agenda for each
Council meeting. Items of business may be placed on the
agenda at the direction of the Mayor, a request by two or more
members of the Town Council, or the Town Manager."
The big key here is Mayes' statement of "future agenda item."
If agenda items for the Council can
be put directly on the agenda by the Town Manager, Andy Takata, and
the Mayor, Frank Luckino, or two Council Members, why is Mayes ONLY
going to request the Council to revisit the LAFCO application as a
future agenda item? Seems like a stall to me! Further, we are expecting
the Hearing to be either mid-August or mid-September. If we
follow Chad Mayes' lead, the Hearing would be here before he can get
it on the agenda and call for a vote. Nope, folks ... this is a
ploy to get us to back off. Why is the Town waiting until
now? This train is running down the track and picking up
speed. We won't stop the train!
Mayes also says,
"If the folks of Yucca Mesa don't want to be part of the Town's
sphere of influence, even though it's something that would benefit
them, why would we continue this process?" Benefit Yucca
Mesa??? There are no benefits to being in the Town's
sphere! We have repeatedly stated we don't want to be included
in their General Plan, nor do we want to be pre-zoned, nor do we
want the Town of Yucca Valley commenting on our building plans so
they can shape Yucca Mesa to look like the Town. Further we
don't want our water to be taken over by the Town. Yucca Mesa
would be destroyed under Yucca Valley government.
The figure of 1000
signatures opposing the Sphere of Influence needs to be
updated. The Coalition has over 2400 signatures.
With all due
respect to Mr. Sammons' past contributions to the Community of Yucca
Mesa, the decision for the selection of a water company to serve
Yucca Mesa is not his. That decision is LAFCO's decision, per
California State Law. See
the role of LAFCO here.
The
Stop Yucca Mesa Annexation Coalition has set its goals and is
proceeding without pause.
