Rejecting Victorville

Daily Press - Victor Valley
December 16, 2009 9:58 AM

I am writing on behalf of residents of Oro Grande CSA 42, a board on which First District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt is seated.

Supervisor Mitzelfelt is also a member of the San Bernardino County LAFCO Board, so knows Oro Grande has been slated to be placed in the sphere of influence of Victorville.

We are currently mounting a grass roots effort to have ourselves removed from the proposed sphere, and are forming a non-profit organization to become eligible for grants and fundraising in order to take care of our own needs. We are also attempting to obtain some relief from our waste water fees (exemplified by a recent 70 percent rate hike) by beginning to separate ourselves from the Victor Valley Waste Water Authority, another board on which Supervisor Mitzelfelt sits. Also of concern is the Quartzite Mountain proposed Bureau of Land Management land swap deal with Cemex. Supervisor Mitzelfelt is on the steering committee that “cherry picked” the proposed parcels in the upcoming Act of Congress.

Supervisor Mitzelfelt has stated, via his representatives, that he does not support the annexation of Oro Grande into Victorville. So far his actions have only shown a desire to bury us in the City of Victorville with all its debt, imminent bankruptcies, allegations of corruption, and a subpar city rating.

Our desire is to install permitted gray water landscaping into the community of Oro Grande, which would reduce our sewer usage by about 50 percent. This action should also allow for a generous fee reduction and possible rebates, as well as a local recharge which environmentally is supported by the State of California, the Environment Protection Agency’s environmental justice, California’s environmental justice, and water conservation groups everywhere.

Our questions to Supervisor Mitzelfelt are: Is he willing to show actions that support our efforts to protect our community? With his influence and membership on the above-mentioned boards, will he provide his assistance and the expertise of his staff to help us in the form of grants, and a press release stating that he does not support the annexation?
