MEDIA KIT The Stop Yucca
Mesa Annexation Coalition has fought the Town of Yucca Valley's application to
LAFCO for a Sphere of Influence over the small Community of Yucca Mesa since
November 4, 2009. On September 1, 2009, we successfully obtained the
Town's withdrawal of the application. This withdrawal also stopped the
Town from municipalizing the Hi-Desert Water District, which required the Town
to have a Sphere of Influence over Yucca Mesa. Mesans did not want either
to be part of Yucca Valley or to have their water municipalized by the Town. Our next battle
was with the Hi-Desert Water District trying to include Yucca Mesa to pay for
the Town of Yucca Valley's wastewater treatment plant and sewers. Yucca
Mesa's source of water is the Ames Basin. The Town's source of water is
the Warren Basin, which is contaminated and the State has required them to
construct a wastewater treatment plant. The Ames Basin is not contaminated
and the residents did not want to pay for the Town's over-building and poor
planning. On December 7,
2009, the Hi-Desert Water District Board voted unanimously that the residents of
Yucca Mesa would not have to pay for the Town's wastewater treatment plant, and
they further supported the Mesan's view that they did not want to Town of Yucca
Valley to municipalize them. The Coalition is
now headed to LAFCO on February 17, 2010, for a Hearing on LAFCO #3134 and LAFCO
#3084. Even though the Coalition has won two battles out of two, and the
Town has withdrawn their application, the Coalition must go to the LAFCO Hearing
to insure that the LAFCO Commissioners do not reverse the decisions of the Town
and Hi-Desert Water District. We would very
much appreciate receiving media coverage on our plight to be left alone and to remain rural (one
corner store) with dark skies, beautiful flora, peace and quiet, open space, and
minimal interference from government. Please click on
